Opinions please

#1 Post by bhodge »

Hi guy's, I'm thinking of getting a new 'old' rifle.
To be precise an older Remington 552 Speedmaster .22 semi-auto. I'd value the opinions of those that have owned, or at least shot one of these rifles....
The idea is to buy a rough one, one that needs a bit of a 'wash 'n brush-up'. The question is:-
How do they perform?
How accurate are they??
Etc......
Thanks in anticipation.

never shot one of those, however I did have for a lot of years a Winchester 190 which is of similar style and vintage, and that little rifle shot everything I ever put through it without complaint (except 22 longs which turned it into a straight pull) it was a surprisingly accurate rifle despite a trigger even a Steyr AUG would wince at ! and with 15rfds in the tube it was an excellent rabbit gun.

I had a Remington Model 572 Fieldmaster for a while. Not exactly the same as the 552 but a close cousin using a pump-action rather than semi-auto....
Loved mine; bought it for £25, got it working (good clean and a new firing pin), shot it loads and then sold it after a year or so for £50.
Highly recomend getting an older one and cleraning it up and they shoot pretty straight as well.

They usually shoot well and are reasonably accurate, I would expect better than thumbnail groups at 25 metres. I am also on the look out for one for myself and I have no plans to spend more than GBP45.00 on the rifle :)

You don't need to buy a "do-er up-er", patience will see you pick up a really nice example for not much money...

But you'll need to spend a little bit more that tight-wads 45 quid above!
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Guns dont kill people. Dads with pretty Daughters do...!

There excellent budget rifles. Quite accurate I use mine with open sights. Mine likes federal subs.

To wrap up....I didn't get a Remington, I bought a 1996 CZ511. A cracking rifle, but component parts are rare to put it mildly.
