Seems they cause a lot of bother to their owners from the plethora of posts on here.

No, of course they're not.... If they were, they'd work...! lol
In 1978 I was told by my grand dad that the secret to rifle accuracy is, a quality bullet, fired down a quality barrel..... How has that changed?

Guns dont kill people. Dads with pretty Daughters do...!

Odd job..

I found that one of the problems with mine not going fully into battery and also the barrel hard to get off and on was due to problems with the guide rod and gas piston sliding on it.

Strip it, take off spring from guide rod and try sliding the gas piston thingy up and down the guide rod.
You will probably find it is tight in some places.
Get some sandpaper and go up and down the rod and remove all paint, then wrap sandpaper round your finger and work inside the piston that slides on it and give it a good polish.

At the end you should be able to put the piston on the rod and tilt the gun up and down and the piston should slide back/forward with no resistance.

This made it 98% easier to get my barrel on/off as well, the other 2% was something else I had to do but you need to do this first.

I've had light strikes on mine before, and it was due to the bolt in the stock, which keeps the upper and lower together had worked loose!

Mine did that when i first got it, but then after a while it started to work the other way and it would tighten itself up instead kukkuk The Firebird lower also tightens the bolt, to the point where i've now destroyed 2 t-handle bit drivers loosening it for cleaning!

If it looks like it is the hammer strength being the issue I have the T&N upgrade trigger/hammer for the original lower assembly if you want to give that a go.
To the other suggestions, I think I should try those all. The spring guide looks like a good place to start, and the receiver bolt. I have some Flitz polish which I can try. Makes sense the piston should move freely.

Regarding the ammo, we used one lot on a clay pigeon day. A lot of guns involved, no issues with any of them. Also, the ones that did go off in my gun had decent impressions, I have some cases with me.

I like the video idea, will try that anyway (I have a tripod at the range and my camera can do slo-mo).

Thanks for all the suggestions!

not so much as giving it a "polish" more of getting rid of the paint etc, my guide rod had a circular ridge round it about half way up, near the gas port. bearing in mind the piston is in the gas port and the gas port is fixed to barrel this stops the barrel sliding off if any obstruction. Give it a GOOD sanding !

OK here is what I found:

1) Piston was moving freely even before I cleaned the gun. I gave the spring guide a small polish with Flitz, but no sanding
2) The rear receiver screw was a quarter turn loose. I tightened that up
3) Took off the Yankee Hill Riser, installed the 30 MOA rail and put the Burris back on the gun
4) The bolt looked fine, firing pin can be manually pushed to the required depth, there isn't any crud hampering it
5) Put the gun back together nice and tight

I can't test it for a week or two, but when I do, I will be filming it in slo-mo with a camera on a tripod.
At this point I can't see the need to sand it. I will have to see what happens and if it still has light strikes I will post the video here.
